As part of the larger Biblissima project, the Department of Greek Studies of IRHT in Paris is looking to recruit a research assistant specialised in Greek manuscripts and libraries for a project on “Inventories of Byzantine and post- Byzantine libraries”. It is a two years appointment (1 year renewable) starting September 1st 2014.

Biblissima is an online digital library developed through the French government program "Équipements d’excellence". It consists of a cluster of databases and repositories of digital images on ancient manuscripts and printed books articulated with a body of electronic editions of ancient texts. It promotes and finances the collection and production of data inside this digital library.

The project “Inventories of Byzantine and post-Byzantine libraries” aims at creating a digital directory of ancient catalogs, inventories, and various lists of Greek manuscripts from the Byzantine period until the end of the Ottoman Empire. The directory will be based on a comprehensive survey of all existing catalogs of Greek manuscripts and archives and on the study of the manuscripts and documents themselves.

This project is also related to the i-Stamboul project centred on the history of the library of Greek manuscripts that Metrophane III, patriarch of Constantinople, collected in the 16th century at the library of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity (on the island of Chalki near Istanbul), and on the history of other Greek libraries in the Ottoman Empire.
The candidate will be responsible for gathering the data and creating the digital directory.

He/she will participate, in collaboration with the other members of the project, in the publication of new inventories and research on the history of libraries in the eastern Mediterranean world.
