Epigraphy and iconography: online publication of a photogrammetric corpus of medieval funerary inscriptions from effigy slabs (13th-16th centuries)
Funerary slabs with incised effigies were widespread in the medieval Christian Western world. They generally took the form of a central effigy framed by an inscription and sometimes by architectural decoration. This epigraphic and iconographic witness is important for our knowledge of medieval culture, yet it remains difficult to study, either because the slab is not physically accessible, or because the photographs that do exist are of insufficient quality.
This project offers access to an unprecedented corpus of funerary slabs, in high definition and in compliance with FAIR principles. The data generated (orthoimages and IIIF manifests) will be deposited on Nakala, guaranteeing access, re-use in accordance with the principles of open science and integration on the Biblissima+ portal. These slabs and their content (text, iconographic details, etc.) will be made available in a way and with a precision that has not yet been possible for this monument. These objects can be linked to all the data on written culture already available on the Biblissima+ portal.
