The range of activities of the CIHAM covers the medieval millennium, with a specialisation on the last three centuries of the Middle Ages. Geographically, work carried out by the CIHAM concerns the Rhone valley and the south-eastern quarter of France, Italy, the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb, with extensions towards the north of France and the Near East.

The sources mobilised are very diverse and come from archives, libraries and museums, but also from researchers’ archives. They are also the product of three major archaeological sites (Albalat in Spain, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in Vaucluse, and La Couronne in the Allier).

The CIHAM is heavily invested in the digital humanities.
